Seven lakes, within a larger mountain

The Seven Rila Lakes lie in northwestern Rila. They form one lake group within a mountain landscape containing many others. The national park describes their glacial origin, linking the water to the basins shaped by ice.

The names are part of the pleasure of getting to know them: the Tear, the Eye, the Kidney, the Twin, the Trefoil, Fish Lake and the Lower Lake. English translations vary slightly between sources, so a Bulgarian name can be useful when matching signs and maps.

A landscape, not a single viewpoint

A wide photograph can make the group look like one compact scene. On the ground, the lakes occupy different levels of the mountain. Deciding which part to visit is a practical choice involving the route, the conditions and the people walking.

The lakes and the monastery are distinct destinations. Seeing both on a map is not a reason to assume they form a simple short walk. Plan a mountain day around the actual route rather than the apparent distance in a photograph.

Before you set out

Use Rila National Park’s current visitor information, rules and map when planning. Check local conditions and any transport you intend to use directly with its operator. A lift timetable or a walking time copied from an old account cannot tell you what will be possible on your date.

The official tourism guidance distinguishes summer walking from the preparation needed in winter. If you need help judging a route, discuss it with a qualified local mountain guide before choosing it. This introduction is about the place, rather than turn-by-turn hiking directions.

Keep the encounter unhurried

The high mountain is part of the world behind Rila’s Tale. These notes leave the story’s discoveries on the page. Come for the landscape itself, with enough time to look and enough flexibility to change your plans.
