THE GROUND BENEATH THE STORY

Pernik: my hometown

Before we reach the mountain, let me introduce you to my hometown.

With Momtchil Dimitrov, author of Rila’s Tale

A reason to stop on the way

I was born in Pernik. It is part of my own story and part of Rila’s Tale, and I want to give it a proper place in a journey through this part of Bulgaria. Its closeness to Sofia makes it a possible beginning on a western approach towards Rila.

Look beyond the industrial label and there is a town to discover through its buildings, working history and living traditions. The mine, the Mining Directorate and Surva reveal different sides of the same place. Together, they make a much more interesting introduction than a quick stop for a photograph.

Below the surface

The Underground Mine Museum takes visitors into preserved galleries of a former coal mine. These are real mine workings, now used to tell the story of extraction, machinery and the labour that shaped the town. It is a physical encounter with that history, in the spaces where it happened.

Arrange the visit with the museum and ask about guiding and any requirements for your party. This is a visit to a historic mine museum, rather than entry to a producing mine.

The Mining Directorate

The Mining Directorate, built in 1932, gives the town’s industrial history an architectural presence above ground. Its exterior, clock tower and richly treated interior invite a closer look at the ambitions of the community that built it. The municipality records renewed public access from 2022.

Confirm which spaces are open for your visit. There is also a new permanent museum exhibition, “Pernik — the Industrial Heart of Bulgaria”, opened in January 2026. It follows the development of industry alongside the life and growth of the town.

Surva: a town in another rhythm

Masks, bells, movement and the gathering of masquerade groups give the Surva festival a character of its own. If this is what brings you to Pernik, plan around the organiser’s confirmed programme rather than assuming dates from a previous year.

The city festival and the Surova folk feast in the surrounding region are connected, but they are not interchangeable names for a single event. The regional tradition is recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. A journey built around it should make room for that distinction and for the people who keep it alive.
