A sanctuary, with the bears at its centre
BEAR SANCTUARY Belitsa cares for rescued bears in a forested setting. Supported by FOUR PAWS and the Brigitte Bardot Foundation, it offers a visit shaped around animal welfare and an introduction to the lives of its residents.
I would come ready to observe rather than expect a performance. The bears decide how visible they are. That makes the visit a chance to think about care and responsibility as well as to see an animal many visitors have never encountered.
Plan for the terrain and the season
Visits follow the sanctuary’s arrangements and seasonal opening. The paths include slopes and steps, so ask about suitability for anyone with limited mobility and check the guidance for children and pushchairs before travelling.
Use the sanctuary’s own website for current visiting information. An expectation of guaranteed close encounters would miss the purpose of the place; the setting and the story of the rescue work belong to the experience too.
Another kind of excitement nearby
Rila Fun Park offers an alpine coaster and other family activities. It is a separate attraction, with its own opening, tickets and participation requirements. Pairing the two can give a family day different rhythms, provided the arrangements suit everyone.
Further into this side of Rila, Semkovo offers a forest and mountain base with its own walking possibilities. Belitsa, Semkovo and nearby Dobarsko belong to the southern part of a wider Rila journey; allow for that geography when combining them with the monastery or the northern resorts.
